Magnobond 3, Parts A & B
ADHESIVE FOR CONCRETE
WET OR DRY, NEW OR OLD
MAGNOBOND 3
DESCRIPTION
This two-component epoxy adhesive produces a bonding membrane between
existing concrete and a freshly poured concrete overlay. Using this
adhesive, concrete can be poured as thin as one inch; without it, a
depth of three inches of concrete would be required for adequate
strength and apparent adhesion. A true adhesive bond is produced
between old and new concrete by using this adhesive. It develops a
strength in a controlled manner; paralleling that of the newly poured
concrete. This bond, however, develops a final strength which is
superior to both the old and the new concrete. Meets or exceeds
requirement of ASTM C-881, Type V.
MIXING, APPLICATION AND CURING
Equal volumes of Parts A and B should be combined by vigorously mixing
them in a suitable container (paint can, paper cup, etc.) for at least
three minutes. Care should be taken to scrape the sides and bottom of
the mixing container with the stirring spatula so that no unmixed epoxy
or curing agent remains unincorporated. Improperly mixed adhesive will
not cure properly and may cause the bond to fail. Preheat to 125°F
before spraying.
Surface preparation is of extreme importance. This adhesive will
perform best when the concrete is sound and free from dirt, scale, old
paint and grease (any oil product). Sandblasting is a universally
accepted method of cleaning concrete and should be used whenever
possible. Etching of concrete can be done alternately by spreading
muriatic (dilute hydrochloric) acid over the surface, then flushing
with clean water once the bubbling has stopped. Oil products are best
removed by using detergent solutions, always followed by clear water
rinses.
Once the epoxy adhesive has been applied to the old concrete, there is
no need to wait before pouring freshly mixed concrete over it. In
fact, the adhesive MUST be "alive" (still wet) at the time the concrete
is poured.
If this system is being sand-filled for use as a surface repair
compound, it can be troweled into place using conventional techniques.
This adhesive begins to cure as soon as it is mixed. It is advisable,
therefore, to mix no more adhesive than that which can be applied
within 20 to 30 minutes. Where concrete is being poured over the wet
adhesive, the adhesive will proceed in its cure at such a rate as to
always be stronger than the new concrete. When used for surface
repairs, allow 16 hours at 77°F (longer at cooler temperatures; shorter
at higher temperatures) before placing the area back into service.
