Starship Leaving the Earth Behind
Raytheon used Magnolia Plastics epoxies not only in constructing their revolutionary Starship, but also in repairing one when it crashed in in February, 1994, just after take-off from Roskilde, Denmark.

After attaining an altitude of just 50 feet, the Starship introduced itself to the frozen ground at 150 mph and slid 984 feet before coming to rest. There were no casualties among either the passengers or the crew. And significantly, the composites in the craft sufferred no damage although the same could not be said of the metal components.

Danish authorities concluded that if the craft had been constructed of metal, not only would there have been casualties, but the aircraft would probably have been completely destroyed. Instead, the aircraft was repaired on-site over a period of 6 months at a cost of $500,000, as opposed to the original estimated year and $1,000,000 plus estimate.

Part of the repair was a wet layup using dry fibers and an epoxy resin system from ... you guessed it! ... Magnolia Plastics!
